About Giving Blood
GBPH encourages adults in attendance and from the community to donate their life-giving blood.  Our goal for the blood drive is to achieve donations exceeding 200 pints for the Orange County Blood Bank. As an incentive to teams, a $25 discount is offered to any teams registering with at least two blood donors. If each of the seventy team provides at least two blood donors, we will have easily met our goal and helped many in our community through these contributions.

A Bloodmobile will be at the event on both Saturday and Sunday so attendees can give a very special donation; their blood

Donating blood is safe and simple. The entire process takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

You may be a volunteer blood donor and help save a life if you:

  • Are age 17 or older.
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds.
  • Are in good health.
  • Are not at risk for HIV/AIDS or other blood borne infectious diseases.

After donating blood it is recommended you:

  • Increase your fluid intake for the next 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid strenuous physical exertion, heavy lifting or pulling with the donation arm for about five hours.
  • Eat well balanced meals for the next 24 hours.

Hockey players who donate blood should exercise caution.

Blood is needed daily to treat:

  • Patients undergoing surgery.
  • Patients being treated for cancer.
  • Patients with blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, anemia or low protein production.
  • Patients with severe burns.
  • Patients with traumatic injuries, such as severe bleeding caused by auto accidents.

Blood cannot be stockpiled. The shelf life ranges from a few hours for some cells to 42 days for others. People must donate blood on a regular basis to maintain an adequate community supply.

The Red Cross enhances blood safety by questioning all blood donors about their medical history and their risk behavior. Each blood donation is tested for infectious disease, including hepatitis and HIV. As a safety precaution, the Red Cross maintains the only national registry of ineligible blood donors, and checks each donor against this list--before allowing them to give blood--to ensure the safest possible blood supply.
